Listen to Obituary

We honor the life and memories of Benjamin Darnell Jones who passed onto a better life on Easter Morning, April 20th, 2025. Benjamin was 48 years young.

Benjamin was born on August 23, 1976, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ben was the second son of Darnell Heaton Jones and Yvonne Skillman Jones. His parents had long awaited another addition to their family. Benjamin’s older brother, Scott Skillman Jones, was 14 years old when he was born.

Benjamin came to earth with various unique talents and special needs. Nevertheless, Darnell and Yvonne were determined to help Benjamin succeed with his social, behavioral and communicative inadequacies. Ben attended Douglas (McGillis) School (Kindergarten through eighth grade) and accessed vital resources for children with learning and behavioral needs. Benjamin’s customized education and family support helped him graduate from both Douglas School and East High School in Salt Lake City.

Benjamin was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a religious scholar. He loved reading the Bible and Book of Mormon. Upon his passing, Benjamin had over 20 sets of scriptures, all well read and marked. Benjamin graduated from Church Education Seminaries and Institute Programs. He loved passing the sacrament and held the office of an Elder in the church.

Benjamin was active in the Boy Scout Program and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Ben was patriotic and civic minded. Often, he wrote senators and states persons about all sorts of issues. Benjamin loved United States History and had a memory for almost any political person and event.

Benjamin participated in the Camp Kostopulos (Camp K) Program which provided special needs children and adults with civic and recreational activities. Ben traveled to Washington D.C. and visited the United States Capital as well as his beloved Lincoln Monument. He went camping in Yellowstone, visited museums and animal farms and explored Dinosaur Sites. Camp “K” recognized Ben as being “The Most Knowledgeable” and always so helpful.

Benjamin participated in the Utah Special Olympics in the “Shot Put” event and medaled. Benjamin loved Classical Music and Art. Benjamin enjoyed all sorts of books. He was a “Wealth of Knowledge” and his recall of facts and information was astounding. Second to reading, was his love for food. Benjamin would always have a desired Food Shopping List for anyone who’d visit him.

Benjamin was employed as an assembler at the Columbus Special Needs Vocational Center in Salt Lake City. He worked there until 2015 when unexpectedly, his brother, Scott, passed away and three months following, his beloved father, Darnell died. It was soon after these tragic events, Benjamin and his mother, Yvonne’s health declined, necessitating a move to Woodland-Sandstone-Monument Care Center.

Everyone who knew Ben eventually became captivated by is knowledge and fascinated by his recall capabilities. One might say, Benjamin was a man with “special needs” although just the opposite, Ben taught us the “special need” to be patient, kind, serve and love unconditionally. Benjamin will be truly missed by many yet, he is at peace in heaven with his beloved family members.

Benjamin was proceeded in death by his parents, Darnell and Yvonne Jones and brother Scott Jones and Uncle Jerry Jones. He is survived by his sister, Juliet Jones, his sister-in-law, Debra (Deby) Jones-Higley, nephews, David Jones, Richard Jones and Seth Jones, Uncle & Aunts: Shenla Jones (widow of beloved Jerry Jones); Bryson & Monalaine Jones; Dennis & Irene Jones; Fayon and Lynn Hunt. Benjamin also is survived by many loving cousins and friends.
