Our beloved Dennis Chin, age 75, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on January 2, 2025. Born November 29, 1949, in San Francisco, California, to Ben Sang Wong and King Chin Wong. On May 22, 1969, he married the love of his life, Rose Hong.

Dennis was a loving, kind, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a brilliant, self-educated man who valued excellence. People all over the world loved his adventurous and fearless spirit. What everyone enjoyed most were his countless stories, always ending in uncontrollable laughter.

In 1990 Dennis and Rose opened Chin-Wah Restaurant in Sandy, Utah. For 33 years it was the family’s second home where they made many lifetime friends. Most important to Dennis was filling everyone’s belly with their favorite dishes including his famous Phoenix Chicken. If you were lucky to be around him, you got to be part of his “Good Food, Good Fortune.”

Many thanks to Denni’s miracle angel, Dr. James E. Pearl, for his medical expertise and friendship.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rose Hong; son Jason (Rachelle); daughters Natasha (Lisi) Tau and Natalie; grandchildren Madison, Benjamin, Chesney, and Lucy Chin and Rosie Tau; younger brother Daniel.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 10 am at Larkin Mortuary Chapel, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111. There will be a viewing on Thursday, January 9, 2025, from 6 to 8 pm at Larkin Mortuary and on Friday 1 hour before the service. Interment will be at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84102.

The family welcomes donations to “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers in his memory.

Dearest Rosie, Jason, Moi and Natalie. I am heartbroken and so sad to hear of the passing of my special friend and brother Denni. He was the kindest, most generous and loving person I had the pleasure of knowing. I so looked forward to our visits together during my trips to the USA. I will be eternally grateful for the blessing of knowing Denni. He will be sorely missed. Lots of love to you all. Willy

Uncle Denny.

What sad news to hear of your passing. It’s hard to explain to people how you could have such an impact on a little family all the way from Africa, but that you did. Your kind and caring nature will forever be remembered. Potstickers, paper wrapped chicken and countless packs of jerky whilst watching movie after movie are core memories that will be with me till my last days from our trips to the US.
You were lovely man uncle Denny. Thank you for all you did for us.
All my love to Auntie Rosie and the family. Our thoughts are with you all.

Love,

Daniel Macdonald

Dearest Chin Family,

It is with heavy heart to hear of Denni’s passing. Denni was truly an impactful person for goodness in people’s lives. We are grateful to be benefactors of Denni’s friendship, kindness, and generosity. A lot of people pass through our lives, but only the best leave tracks and memories to treasure. Denni and Rose, you are memory and trail makers! Words cannot express enough how much we value this friendship. As we also cannot say enough about how kind, caring, generous and genuinely friendly a man Denni was. Rose and children, our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to you all. And Dennis, God speed our friend until we meet again.

Jim and I want to express our deepest sympathy. Dennis is a great man and will be missed. Dennis gave me a compliment while I was shoveling our driveway. He said I worked like a “Chinaman”. I will never forget his expression of great love towards Rose. He said “my knees still buckle when I’m around her”. He deeply loves his family.
Jim isn’t a religious man but he prayed daily for Dennis.

Much love is sent your way,
Betsy and Jim

Dear Rose and Jason my sincere condolences. I’ve fond memories of Dennis and wondered about him over the years. I visited Salt Lake this summer on a house inspection for a friend and tried to find a way to contact him hoping for a chance to let him know how much I respected him and really enjoyed our short time together from talking about moose hunting together some day to going to the Ding How and eating in the kitchen with him and the other cooks. Great memories. Dominic Mauricio
