Frederick McKay Smith was born January 14, 1949 in Shelley Idaho to F. McKay Smith and Jeannine T. Smith. He died August 22, 2024 in Midvale Utah at the age of 75 due to a return of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) which he previously successfully battled in 2014.

Fred is survived by his eternal companion Merilyn T. Smith, their seven children, Frederick (Almudena), Monika (Harold), Robert (Meridee), Parker (Teryl), Michael (Megan), Barton (Mitzi), Weston (Nicole) thirty three grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his eleven siblings, he being the oldest son of twelve sons and daughters.

Fred was known by the community for his kindness, his humor and his commitment to his Heavenly Father. He was a friend to all, and tireless when it came to helping others. He was a man who was not afraid of beginning an impossible task and somehow making the impossible possible. His native intelligence and pure determination and courage served him all through his life.

As a young man he worked on ranches and farms, he was good with horses and fully embodied the ethos of a hard working western man. From before the sun rose to long after it set he did whatever was needed to provide for those he loved. He dreamed of being a medical doctor and excelled in his studies, but as his family grew and finances made continuing his education impossible, he set aside his dreams and forged new ones. He built successful businesses and provided good jobs for many families in diverse fields. He was a true renaissance man in that he never gave up on his love for science and technology of which his knowledge and understanding was impressive. But above all was his love for his family and his fellow passengers through mortality. As his cancer returned, and did so with cruel vengeance, his only concerns were for those he would leave behind. He worked to communicate his endless love for them and desires for their well being.

Fred is deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Services will be held in his honor on September 7, 2024 at 11:00 AM at 7155 S. 540 E. Midvale, UT 84047 with a visitation prior from 9:00 - 10:45 AM. There will be a visitation on Friday night September 6, 2024 from 6:30-8:30 at the same address.

Oh Merilyn and Family - I well remember some of the good ole days back at the U's East Village with you all. Fred and I studied together many long hours with the pre-med curriculum and it used to drive me crazy how quickly he mastered the material, while I struggled. I also remember when I bought my Suzuki motorcycle and Fred got the Beemer, and all those long relaxing rides into the mountains we went on to decompress from the studies and stresses associated with just trying to make ends meets while supporting large families.....it was a stressful time, but also a time of fond, loving memories with you, Fred and the families. We love you and pray for your peace and comfort at this time of parting, but know we will see Fred again!

Fred Smith …one of the sweetest, kindest, men we have ever known. He truly had the light of Christ with him. He simply made you feel better and happier just by being around him. We will miss the many long years of brother and sisterhood we have shared laughing and enjoying life, along with our many deep spiritual conversations we had with him. We are so grateful to know that this friendship will continue on through out the eternities, but we will miss him terribly in mortality. Until we meet again dear friend, you will always be in our thoughts and warmly in our hearts. Thank you for your unconditional love, example, and friendship.

With eternal love,

Elliott and Meya Fitzgerald
